On doors and unprimed sheets used for cabinet part, pillars, etc it often swells up texture on the face of the mdf. I have worked with painters who used solvent lacquer undercoat as their primer but they were noticing health effects on the lungs even using respirators. For smooth surfaces at home #1 is Zinsser Bin white pigmented shellac primer. It sticks to about anything, can be topcoated with anything, excellent for sealing tannin from bleeding into the paint, and it dries really fast, can usually be sanded in an hour or two. It is thin and shrinks a lot as it dries so will flatten out nicely I just did some shelves which were new 25mm moisture resistant MDF, and I gave them 1 coat of watered down white acrylic primer (about 65/35 paint to water) on the faces. Posted October 31, 2010. Regardless of which primer you use be sure to sand the MDF first with 180 grit.It has a waxy coating that should be removed. Shellac is an excellent universal primer and dries quickly.It is also 100% organic.You need to sand it back lightly before appling top coats of paint. We suggest you apply the first priming coat a little thinner and the second undercoating layer at normal thickness. Once dry, the MDF can be painted with your preferred topcoat Don't think you'd need to use the primer, just go for undercoat and top coat. You need to prime the MDF - it is so absorbent that if you paint with emulsion straight onto it all of the moisture will be sucked out of the paint and you will be left with a film of dry emulsion that will not stick to the MDF properly
I make loads of cabinets from mdf and recently have had to start painting all of them. After having useless results with the earlex hv5500 spray gun i'm now using just a compressor and cheap gun (with much better results). However the constance issue i have is with the primer. I finish the units in a dulux satinwood (water based) which is great Definitely prime MDF with an oil-based primer. Found this old but unopened tin and though it had an oil slick on top it soon mixed in. Seemed watery but it was in fact bang on. Applied with a foam roller. Great coverage. Took longer to dry of course than the water based ones
